Export SVG to PNG at high resolution (2x, 4x)
An SVG is vector, so it can be rendered sharp at any size. The question is only which pixel size you want. LocalSvgPng rasterises the vector directly at the target size: a 4x PNG is drawn at 4x, not stretched from a 1x bitmap.
How the 1x size is decided
- If the root
<svg>haswidthandheightin px (or no unit), those are 1x. - Physical units are converted at 96 px per inch:
1in= 96 px,1mm≈ 3.78 px,1pt≈ 1.33 px. - If width/height are missing or relative (
100%,em), theviewBoxwidth and height are used. AviewBox="0 0 24 24"icon is 24×24 at 1x and 96×96 at 4x. - If there is only one of width or height, the other follows the viewBox ratio.
Steps for an exact width
- Drop the SVG on the converter and pick Custom.
- Type only a width, for example 3000. Height is calculated from the aspect ratio.
- Or type width and height: the image is scaled to fit inside that box without distortion, so one side may come out smaller than you typed.
- Convert, then check the pixel size printed under each thumbnail.
Limits for very large exports
Each side is capped at 16384 px and the total at 64 megapixels. A 64-megapixel RGBA canvas needs about 256 MB of memory before PNG encoding, and browsers have their own canvas limits (MDN documents per-browser maximums). Phones often fail well below the cap. If the browser cannot encode, you get an error rather than an empty file. For print posters, consider exporting PDF from your design tool instead.
FAQ
Is a 4x PNG really sharper than a 1x PNG enlarged?
Yes. The SVG is rasterised at the 4x pixel size, so curves and text edges are computed at that resolution instead of being interpolated from fewer pixels.
What DPI does the PNG have?
The tool does not write a DPI (pHYs) value. Pixel count is what matters on screens. For print, divide pixels by the DPI you need: 3000 px at 300 DPI is 10 inches.
Why is my SVG converted at 300 x 150?
It should not be with this tool: when width and height are missing, the viewBox is used. If there is neither, the file is refused with a message asking for a custom width and height.
What is the largest PNG I can make?
16384 px on a side and 64 megapixels in total, such as 8000 x 8000 or 16384 x 3900. Your device's memory may set a lower practical limit.
Will thin lines get thicker at 4x?
No. Stroke widths scale with the drawing, so lines keep their proportion. Hairlines that use vector-effect non-scaling-stroke stay one unit wide and may look thinner relative to the image.
Can I export many sizes of one SVG at once?
Not in one pass. Convert once per scale. Each run gives fresh download links named after the source file.
