SVG to PNG with a transparent background

An SVG has no background unless it draws one. When LocalSvgPng converts it, every pixel the SVG does not paint stays fully transparent (alpha 0) in the PNG. That is the default on the converter.

Steps

  1. Open the converter and drop your .svg.
  2. Leave Transparent ticked. Pick a scale (1x, 2x, 4x) or a custom width.
  3. Press Convert to PNG. The thumbnail sits on a grey checkerboard: checkerboard showing through means transparent pixels.
  4. Download. The PNG is 8-bit RGBA, so edges keep their anti-aliased partial transparency.

When the background is not transparent

Adding a solid colour

Untick Transparent and choose a colour. The tool fills the whole canvas with it before drawing the SVG, so the output has no transparent pixels at all. The colour is applied in sRGB as shown by your browser's colour picker.

FAQ

Does the PNG keep semi-transparent areas?

Yes. Fill and stroke opacity, gradients that fade to transparent and anti-aliased edges are stored as partial alpha in the RGBA PNG.

Why does my transparent PNG look black?

The viewer is drawing transparent pixels as black. The alpha channel is still there. Check in an image editor, or export with a solid background colour if the destination cannot show transparency.

Why is there a white box behind my logo?

The SVG itself contains a background shape, usually a full-size rect. The converter renders what the SVG draws, so remove that shape in your editor and convert again.

Can I choose the background colour?

Yes. Untick Transparent and pick any colour. The canvas is filled with it before the SVG is drawn on top.

Does a background colour change the file size?

Usually only a little. PNG compresses flat areas well, and a solid colour is a flat area. Large photographic images embedded in the SVG dominate size either way.

Is the SVG uploaded to add transparency?

No. Drawing and PNG encoding happen in the canvas of this tab. The page's security policy blocks script network requests; see the trust page to check in DevTools.
